Ron's Journal:
Week 46

Sunday, April 8, 2006
Easter Sunday I went to family friends and had dinner, played games and talked politics, they are going to help support the cause and helped fatten me up for the trip.

Went and got my teeth taken care of, 2 ½ hours of drilling and redoing fillings, that is not something I want to do again soon, any longer and I would have told him anything he wanted to know. Stopped and saw a few friends before I am going, returned calls to people that want to make a difference.

Meet with Lawrence Keating, he put together a program that we could use as the foundation of our pilot program and gave him numbers of others I am working with so we can work together. Since he has worked in the system for years he told me how the V.A. plays with numbers to make things look better then they are. Is there any place where there isn’t some sort of corruption? Came home did some finishing touches on my gear.

Went and saw the Chiropractor for one last adjustment, re worded our mission statement. Talked to Joe and found out that our meeting with Bishop has been cancelled. Worked on the web page and contacted a few people hoping to set up some meetings along the way. I have discovered then when I am to anxious about getting something it usually doesn’t happen because underneath that anxiety is doubt or concern that it won’t happen and that is what I create; I am changing that as I write.

Left in the rain and since my appointment with Tim Bishop was cancelled, I saw a few people on my way out. I saw the news about the 3 boys who were accused of rape, whose families spent millions to clear their names. They believd in them, fought the system, sacrificed their wealth because they had faith in their children – the truth came out, they were cleared. What truth will come to light about our returning troops? What will I do to make that happen?

We stopped in Pennsylvania to see Pat Murphy (8th District Congressman) who had contacted me before I got off the trail in October, taking a chance he would be in. He wasn’t in, but his staff knew of me, wished me well, and sent me to the local paper “The Intelligencer”. Being Friday, the paper was understaffed and said they would call if they had someone free to do a story. I don’t know if I was brushed off or not. Will call later. Read in the paper about Imus losing his job and how offensive his remark was and how it would affect teen listeners. I hope they go after the rappers and don’t just stop there, otherwise it is just another form of hypocrisy and prejudice.

First day back in the woods. After staying in a B&B, we did 8 miles slack packing (carrying little to nothing) in the rain. It took us 5hrs (slow) – my back is sore. Met a few other hikers and one thru hiker (Hook) – getting them to write. Back at the B&B, met Lou who is in an organization dealing with poverty. I asked him if his group would endorse us.
